Monthly output at 3.077Mt, Egypt

Egypt’s cement output stood at 3.077Mt in September 2005, down from 3.148Mt in August 2005, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) said in a report.    Production of clinker fell to 2.75Mt in September 2005 from 3.078Mt in the previous month. Cement major ACC is set to ramp up its captive power capacity to over 300mW by the second half of the current year from the present 255mW. The Afghan government has expressed serious reservations on Pakistan’s decision to ban cement export to Afghanistan and Kabul has informed Islamabad that the decision will seriously affect the reconstruction drive in the war-ravaged country, a senior government official told the Daily Times on Thursday. Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), India’s largest steel company, is planning to tie up with leading cement producers like ACC, Birla Corporation and Jaiprakash Associates for setting up cement plants.   The public sector steel major has invited expressions of interest for setting up two cement plants, one each in Bhilai and Bokaro, the location for two of its biggest steel units. Holcim strengthens strategic alliance

The boards of Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd (GACL) and Ambuja Cement Eastern Ltd (ACEL) have decided to combine the two companies. Holcim-controlled ACEL will now be merged into GACL. As a result of this transaction, Holcim’s equity interest in GACL will increase to approximately 23 per cent.
