Cemex to increase cement production in the UAE

Cemex announced today that it intends to begin construction of a new grinding facility for cement and slag in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in order to help meet increased local demand. The construction of the grinding facility will increase commercial and production capacity in the region to 1.6Mt of cement. The estimated investment in the new facility is US$50m. Lafarge to participate in Mexican grey-cement market

Lafarge is to participate in the Mexican grey-cement market from late April. The company is to start operations in its Hidalgo plant, which demanded an investment of US$121m. The plant will produce 600,000t of cement a year, in a first stage.  Lafarge Cementos Mexico CEO, Carlos Castillo, explained that the consortium’s strategy is to remain as an international construction leader in each of its divisions.

Buzzi Unicem Elects Pavilion Technologies to Increase Operating Efficiency

Contractors demand control of cement prices

The Indian Builders and Contractors Association, on Sunday, demanded the government to control the prices of cement and steel. The Association members, who met here on Sunday, decided to take up a protest on March 28 against the increased prices of steel and cement in the town. Workers at Nevada Cement reject contract offer

While their contract expired at midnight Friday, the workers have no immediate plans to strike, union officials said. Ninety workers at the company belong to either Laborers’ Union Local 169 or Teamsters Local 533. Lafarge North America (LNA) said Friday, March 23, that a committee of board members had rejected a US$3bn buyout offer from its French parent, Lafarge SA. The committee considers the bid of US$75 a share "inadequate and not in the best interests of Lafarge North America stockholders, other than Lafarge SA and its affiliates," LNA said in a statement. Construction of new US Holcim cement plant begins

Work on Dong Lam cement factory begin

Dong Lam Cement Joint Stock Co started construction on Monday on the Dong Lam cement plant in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue. The plant, built at a cost of VND2.8 trillion (US$176.5 million), is expected to produce 1.4Mta of cement per year when fully operational in 2008.

Jaypee, Shree and Birla cement in race to form JV with Sail

Three private Indian cement manufacturers -- Jaypee Cement, Shree Cement and Birla Cement — are reportedly in the race to form a joint venture with state-owned Steel Authority of India Limited  to set up a 2.5Mta cement plant. SAIL would have 24 per cent stake in the JV, while the majority 76 per cent stake would be owned by one of the three bidders, sources said. The final decision with regard to selection of joint venture partner will be taken soon by SAIL.
