Cement prices jump 15% in Feb

Cement makers have raised retail prices by about 15 per cent in February following a recent court ruling restricting the loading of cement on trucks, and prices could rise further in March, dealers said on Thursday. Rising investment in houses and roads has also helped prices. Lafarge benefits from strong 2H

Lafarge said full year operating profit was Euro 2.357bn, up seven per cent on the year and up four per cent at constant prices. For the 2H period operating income was up 17 per cent. Cement Plant Becomes Operational in Quang Binh

The Vietnamese Song Gianh cement plant, at total investment of VND3.2 trillion ($202.5m), was officially put into operation in central Quang Binh province on February 19.  The plant, invested by the Central Construction Corp. Valderrivas cement now controls Lemona

Cementos Portland Valderrivas said on Wednesday it now controlled 96 per cent of the share capital of rival cement manufacturer Cementos Lemona after a public takeover offer. Valderrivas, which is a unit of construction group Fomento de Construccciones y Contratas, said it received acceptances from shareholders representing 65.3 per cent of Lemona’s share capital. Valderrivas already owned 30.7 per cent of Lemona. 

Mexico Cemex to offer Ara special deal

Cemex and Mexican housing developer Consorcio Ara have signed an agreement, through which the cement company sold an 89-hectare land in Puebla and will supply products at preferential prices.  Ara’s Investor Relations Director, Jaime del Río, commented that works in this housing development, named Los Angeles, will begin the next year. The project involves a shopping center and 5300 medium and residential houses. The land sold by Cemex will be paid by Ara over the following years. 

Semen Gresik expects infrastructure surge

The Venezuelan unit of Mexican cement company Cemex (CX) reopened its administrative offices Tuesday after the Seniat tax authority shut them on Monday for bookkeeping irregularities, said a company executive.  "The offices are open," said Corporate Director Luis Manuel de Llano.  He said Vencemos, as Cemex’s local unit is known, plans to pay a $106,000 tax fine shortly.
