Cement maker PT Semen Padang in West Sumatra targets a 56.15 per cent increase in net profit to Rp212.23 billion (US$21.2m) from this year’s target of Rp135.91 billion. Buzzi Unicem is investing US$262m to increase capacity at the Buzzi Unicem USA works at Selma, Mo.  A new five stage preheater / precalciner kiln is to replace two existing long dry kilns. The works, which is located on the Mississippi river, will see its cement capacity increase from the current level of 1.3m tonnes to 2.3Mt, once the investment programme is completed in the second half of 2008. Infrastructure projects to boost cement demand

Despite a predicted fall in consumer purchasing power as a result of higher interest rates, cement demand is expected to remain high in 2006 with a boost from government and private sector spending on infrastructure projects.     Infrastructure projects are expected to offset a decline in cement demand from the housing and property sector. In November, cement production rose by 34% compared with November 2004, to 941,000t, the State Statistics Committee disclosed. Taiwan Regulator fines cement cartel

Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission said Thursday it fined 21 local cement companies a total of NT$210m (US$6.3m) for price fixing between 2000 and 2003.  Almost all of Taiwan’s major cement manufacturers and silo holders or distributors jointly raised domestic prices during that period, the commission said.  The companies include Taiwan Cement Corp, the island’s largest cement producer by revenue, and Tung Woo Corp, a local distributor wholly owned by Cemex.   Taiwan Cement and Tung Woo were fine...

Holcim Vietnam on December 9 inaugurated its new concrete plant in Cat Lai in southern Ho Chi Minh City’s District 2.  The factory, capitalized at $3 million, covering 15,000m2, has the capacity of 120m3 an hour.   The Holcim joint venture is one of the leading cement producers in Vietnam.
