Egyptian white cement output at 2.724Mt

Egypt’s white cement output stood at 2.724Mt in March 2005, up from 2.303Mt in February 2005, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) said in a report.    Production of clinker rose to 2.971Mt in March 2005 from 2.542Mt in the previous month. Thai Siam City Cement Q3 net down on higher cost

Siam City Cement (SCCC), Thailand’s second-biggest cement maker, reported a 7 percent fall in third-quarter net profit on Wednesday due to higher fuel and electricity prices.    Its quarterly net profit fell to THB1.04bn ($25 million), or THB4.38/share, from THB1.1bn, or THB4.62/share, a year earlier, the company said in a statement. Lafarge buys out another importer

Lafarge has further consolidated its leading position in the British cement market, albeit in a small way, by acquiring the Kent-based importer The Port Land Cement Company from its founder Robert Lee.  The Port Land Cement Company operates an import operation at Ridham Dock, near Sittingbourne in Kent and sells both bagged and bulk cement. It volumes are believed to amount to around 0.1Mt on an annualised basis.

Jaypee may resume Bhutan cement project

The Jaypee Group has said it is interested to resume construction of the Dangsum Cement Plant in Bhutan with a capacity of 500,000tpa. India had inked an agreement with Bhutan in 1996 for setting up the cement plant but the work was suspended on account of insurgency in the area.   India had granted Rs 300 crore for the plant, to be set up in Ngaglam in southeast Bhutan, and another Rs 100 crore for related infrastructure including roads, railway projects, power supply and storage facilities...

A delegation of GCC Rio Grande executives will meet with county commissioners today. Lebanon sales

According to Assafir newspaper (November 7, 2005), a recently publicized report by the Association of Banks in Lebanon estimated at that 299,000t of cement was delivered in July 2005 compared with 305,000t in the previous month of June and 264,000t in July 2004. The delivered cement amounts totaled 1,585,000t in the first seven months of 2005 compared with 1,492,000t in the same period last year, a 6.2% rise.  

Plant construction announced

The A-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper  quoted a notice published in early October 2005 announcing the building of a cement-making factory. The contract for this was signed between the Gulf Mortgage and Investments Company and the Bahrain Motor Manufacturing Company. The new company will be called “Saqir Cement Manufacturing Company”. The paper estimated that the first stage of work on this project will begin during the first quarter of 2006 at an investment of $45 million.

Cementos Portland net attributable profit up

Spanish cement maker Cementos Portland Valderribas S.A. (Cementos Portland) posted a EUR103m (US$121.7m) net attributable profit for the first nine months of 2005, up 11 per cent YoY, the company said.   EBITDA increased by 16.7 per cent to EUR237.6m. Cementos Portland turnover totalled EUR736.3m up 8.8 per cent, boosted by increasing sales of construction materials.    The company sold 7.7Mt of cement and clinker, up 9.1 per cent. Sales of concrete increased by 7.5 per cent to 4.3Mt. 

UAE’s Cement Producers Combined Net Profit Up 102%

The combined net profit of the eight cement and building materials companies listed on the Dubai Financial Market (DFM) soared 102 per cent YoY to AED1.31bn (US$356.7m) in the first nine months of 2005.    The surging profits of the UAE cement makers are a result of the booming construction sector in the country and the increased demand for cement.    The companies’ total assets stood at AED9.38bn (US$2.554bn) at the end of September 2005, up from AED6.49bn (US$1.767bn) at the end of Decemb...

Saudi Arabian Cement net profit down

Saudi cement producer Arabian Cement Company posted a net profit of SAR252m (US$67.2m) for the first nine months of 2005, down 3.5 per cent YoY.  The fall came despite the 16.9 per cent rise in sales to SAR519.7m (US$138.6 mln/117.3m). Operating income also rose to SAR248m (US$66.1m) in the first nine months of 2005, which was offset by a sharp decrease in other income to SAR15.7 m ($4.2 mln/3.5 mln euro).
