Leading foreign private equity majors such as JP Morgan are interested in acquiring equity stakes in Indian cement companies. Foreign funds are reported to have evinced interest in domestic cement firms such as Andhra Cements, Chettinad Cements and India Cements in the south, and Binani Cements in the north. India’s National Power Thermal Corporation (NTPC) is exploring the possibility of exporting fly ash to the Middle East, an official disclosed. The disposal of fly ash is one of the main problems faced by thermal power units as it caused pollution. Only 47 per cent of the fly ash was used at present and there was a huge surplus prompting the NTPC to explore export opportunities. Even with slumping sales, the German cement industry plans another round of price hikes, according to Financial Times Deutschland. Germany’s second-largest cement company, Dyckerhoff AG plans to raise prices by 15 per cent at the start of January 2006. Wolfgang Bauer, chief executive, blamed "exploding" energy costs for the need to raise prices.

Vietnam’s consumption increases in October

Last month, Vietnam consumed roughly 2.25Mt of cement, a growth of 12.5 per cent over last year’s corresponding period, said the Vietnam Cement Association. The increase has brought the nation’s total cement consumption for the first 10 months up to 23Mt, the association added. The association also forecasts that Vietnam is likely to sell 28.5-29Mt of cement this year, an increase of 10 per cent over last year.
