Somaliland to reopen cement factory

The Somaliland president, Dahir Riyale Kahin, has announced plans to re-open the Berbera cement factory, after it had been closed for more than a decade.  Mr Riyale said the factory could employ thousands of jobless Somalis. President opens US$100m Domicem works

The Dominican Republic’s President Hipólito Mejía inaugurated a US$100m cement plant for company Domicem, the Diario de Hoy reported. The plant, located in south-central San Cristóbal province, has the capacity to produce 1 million bags of cement a month and has created some 500 direct jobs and 1500 indirect jobs.  With the new operations, the country will reduce clinker and cement imports, which currently total 2Mt, the paper said.  The company is expected to make profits of 60m pesos (US$1....

Taiheiyo Cement Corp plans to ramp up its cement production overseas, starting with an investment of more than 10bn yen for a factory in the U.S. state of Arizona. China’s output of cement reached 180.30Mt in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 23.8 per cent over the same period of last year, according to statistics from the State Development and Reform Commission. At the same time, output of concrete, construction sanitary ceramics, plaster plate and cement production equipment posed more 30 per cent growth in the period.

Leading cement companies are expected to increase their exports to the promising Iraqi market this year despite the security deterioration in some parts of the country. Ash Grove Cement Co. and San Antonio-based Alamo Cement Co. have announced a venture to build a Port of Houston cement terminal with annual throughput capacity of 1.5Mt. Turkish cement producer Cimsa targets to increase its white cement and clinker sales to 900,000t in 2004, from 800,000 in 2003. Cimsa is seeking to expand on the Russian market. The Department of Industrial Works said it expects the second cement plant of Siam City Cement Plc (SCCC) in Saraburi province to resume production next week after an explosion early last week.
