Mexican cement company Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC) reported MXP144m (US$12.7mn) in net income first quarter 2004, a 5.5 per cent slip YoY, while net sales inched up 1.6 per cent to MXP835m, the company announced. Gujarat Ambuja Cements (GACL) has embarked on an expansion of captive power capacity at its various plants. In what would be a cost saving exercise, the company has earmarked Rs 225 crore to set up 75mw of new captive power plants at its various units. Paraguayan state-owned cement company INC needs a $70m (ERU59m) investment in modernisation and doubling its clinker capacity, according to INC president, Amilcar Troche, said. Cement sales in Indonesia grew eight percent to 2.27Mt in March from a year earlier, the country’s largest cement maker, PT Semen Gresik Tbk, said. Gresik sold 1.19Mt of cement in March, including exports, up 21.2 per cent from the same month in 2003. Gresik is 25.5 percent owned by Cemex. State-run Gresik said its domestic cement sales in March rose 18.8 per cent from a year earlier to 1.04Mt. Thailand’s second-biggest cement firm, Siam City Cement PCL  said on it had shut one of its three plants after an explosion earlier this week that killed three workers. PT Semen Gresik, an Indonesian cement maker, said its total cement sales in the first quarter of this year rose 15 per cent on year to 3.42Mt from 2.98Mt, mostly because of an increase in domestic sales. Semen Gresik’s domestic cement sales during the period rose 17 per cent to 3.02Mt, from 2.58t in the same period last year.  Its cement exports, however, fell 0.4 per cent on year to 398,737t in the first quarter of 2003.
