Swiss cement demand advances 4.2% in 2016

Swiss cement producers dispatched 1,076,007t of cement in 4Q16, up 1.6 per cent from 1,058,619t delivered in 4Q15, according to the latest data of the country's cement association, Cemsuisse. The figures include dispatches to Liechtenstein. In 2016 total cement deliveries reached 4,397,180t, a 4.2 per cent increase from 4,219,466t when compared with the previous year. Although the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) says it has penned a quality certification draft, the government is yet to begin the grading process for domestic cement brands. The first 11 months of 2016 Indonesian cement sales reached a total of 56.5Mt, up 2.8 per cent YoY from domestic cement sales in the same period one year earlier. Minister of Industry and Mining, Abdesslam Bouchouareb, has inaugurated the second production unit at GICA’s cement plant at Ain El Kebira, Setif. The 2Mta unit will help Algeria to reach the stage of self-sufficiency in cement supply. CAR government signs limestone agreement

The government of the Central African Republic (CAR) is one step closer to the exploitation of the limestone deposit in Bombassa and Ndimba villages, on the banks of the Oubangui river. During the first six months of current FY16-17, Pakistan's cement industry recorded a growth of 11.07 per cent in local dispatches, while exports declined 3.53 per cent compared during the same period of last year, respectively. Cemex Latam Holdings, subsidiary of Cemex, has supplied cement to a 50km road upgrade project of the Inter-American Highway in Costa Rica. The highway was widened to four lanes, with two in either direction. Some 200,000t of high-strength cement was supplied by Cemex to produce the concrete. Senegal: government introduces new tax on cement

As of 2 January, the price of cement in Senegal has increased by XOF3000 (US$4.84)/t. The Senegalese government has implemented a new tax of XOF3/kg on cement. The tax will be applied by all three domestic cement companies - Sococim, Ciments du Sahel and Dangote Cement Senegal.
