Cement dispatches in Chile declined 4.2 per cent YoY to 299,858t in April 2023 from 313,101t in April 2022, according to the country’s construction chamber, CChC. In the January-April 2023 period cement sales were down 8.9 per cent YoY to 1,225,919t from 1,345,102t in the 4M22.

BCMA calls on government to lower customs duty on clinker

The Bangladesh Cement Manufacturers Association (BCMA) has urged the country’s government to reduce the customs duty on clinker.  Cement producers are currently required to pay a duty of BDT500/t (US$4.61/t) on imported clinker. The government has proposed to increase this to BDT700 in its budget for the next fiscal year. Brazilian cement market expands 1% in May

Cement sales in Brazil (excluding imports) increased by 1.2 per cent to 5.56Mt in May 2023, when compared with 5.494Mt in May 2022, according to the Brazilian cement association, SNIC. The northern market saw the biggest increase, by 8.3 per cent YoY, to 234,000t, followed by the south, where the uptick was 3.9 per cent YoY to 975,000t. The Argentine cement market contracted 1.5 per cent YoY to 1,072,110t in May 2023, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. In May 2022 domestic consumption reached 1,088,000t. However, MoM demand was up 4.2 per cent from 1,028,598t in April 2023. Market demand was entirely supplied by domestic production, which contracted two per cent YoY from 1,098,484t to 1,076,287t in May 2023. The Panamanian flag bulk carrier Lowlands Amstel (IMO: 9738947) is loading over 47,000t cement clinker at berth B11/B12 of Karachi Port of Pakistan due for Ghana amid safety measures due to the threat of a strong cyclone, which is likely to landfall/hit some coastlines of Sindh later this week, according to Karachi Port. Iranian cement consumption grows 13% in April

The Iranian cement market expanded 12.5 per cent YoY to 4.5Mt in April 2023, according to the Iranian Cement Association. Domestic cement production stood at 4.89Mt (up 7.2 per cent YoY), while clinker output reached 7.26Mt (+3.9 per cent YoY). In terms of exports, the industry’s performance was more muted. Cement exports declined 8.6 per cent to 0.384Mt when compared with the equivalent period of the previous year. Clinker exports fell by 30 per cent YoY 0.553Mt.

Cement companies post a rise in pre-tax profit but face challenges
