Peruvian cement consumption declined by 12 per cent YoY to 0.971Mt in May 2023, according to the country’s cement association, ASOCEM. Iranian cement demand advances 14% in May

Iran’s cement market has expanded by 13.9 per cent to 5.82Mt in May 2023 when compared with May 2022, when 5.11Mt of cement was sold, according to the Iranian Cement Association. Cement and clinker production increased YoY by 18.4 per cent to 6.37Mt and 5.6 per cent to 7.3Mt in May 2023, respectively. Iran’s cement producers exported 0.4Mt of cement in May 2023, up 33.6 per cent YoY, and 0.81Mt of clinker, up 45.7 per cent YoY.

Indian cement prices forecast to fall 1-3%

Cement prices in India are expected to fall by 1-3 per cent in the current fiscal year (April 2023-March 2024), after recording a four per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past four fiscal years to a new all-time high of INR391 (US$4.77)/50kg bag, according to CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics. Sri Lanka raises import tax on cement

The Sri Lankan government has increased the import tax (CESS) on imported cement. With effect from 17 June 2023, the import tax on 1kg of artificially coloured or uncoloured cement has risen from LKR3.00 to LKR5.00 (US$0.01-0.02). The import tax on 1kg of Portland cement in bags of 50kg or less has increased to LKR8.00. Meanwhile, the import tax on other Portland cement in bags over 50kg has advanced from LKR3.00 to LKR5.00, according to Colombo Page. 

Senegal's cement consumption fell 22% in April

The Senegalese cement market contracted 22.1 per cent MoM and 10.6 per cent YoY to 525,100t in April 2023, according to the country’s Department for Economic Planning and Policies (DPEE). While exports were down 17.6 per cent MoM in April 2023, when compared with April 2022 they surged 148.8 per cent to 159,200t. Output from domestic cement plants retreated 18.4 per cent MoM but increased by four per cent YoY to 693,500t in April 2023.

Cement sales in Puerto Rico declined 8.5 per cent YoY to 1.2m bags of 94lb, or 51,165t, in April 2023, according to the country’s Institute of Statistics. However, in May 2023 the market expanded by 5.7 per cent YoY to 1.4m bags, or 59,693t. In the year-to-date, approximately 6.4m bags of cement have been sold in Puerto Rico.
