Hrazdan cement plant, Armenia, has an outstanding debt of AMD509m (USD1.08m) owed to the tax authorities and faces closure, according to plant manager Naira Martirosyan. Rashmi Group (India) intends to invest INR1.5bn (USD24m) to increase cement capacity at its 0.2Mta Jhargram grinding plant in West Bengal. The price of cement has gone up by INR100 per bag (USD1.61) over the last six months in Tamil Nadu, according to the Tiruchi branch of the Builders’ Association of India. US market picks up 12% YoY in January 2015

US market demand reached 5,355,378t, representing a 12.1 per cent increase on January 2014, according to preliminary figures by the US Geological Survey. Shipments of Portland and blended cement by US producers reached 4,859,373t in January 2015. Clinker production stood at 5,407,342t. In addition, the country imported some 496,005t of cement. Exports by US producers totalled 51,037t, down 9.5 per cent YoY.

Vietnam's cement sales in 1Q15 slipped 0.5 per cent YoY to 10.6Mt as many projects started late after a long holiday and exports fell 35 per cent in March, according to the Construction Industry. Domestic consumption in March decreased 23 per cent YoY to 3.91Mt.

Portland and blended cement shipments in the US and Puerto Rico in 2014 reached 88.4Mt, up by about eight per cent YoY, latest data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) confirms.
