US August cement shipments ahead YoY

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico in August 2013 rose five per cent YoY to 8.6Mt, data from the US Geological Survey shows. Shipments for the year through to August were also up slightly to 53.7Mt. Douala plant expects first output in 2Q14, Cameroon

Dangote Cement’s new cement factory in Douala, Cameroon, is on-track to start producing its first cement in May 2014, the plant’s general manager has said. “The installation activities are ongoing. Engineering is almost 100 per cent done, procurement about 90 per cent, construction we have attained about 60 per cent and we hope that by April or May 2014, we should be in the market,” Adullali Baba told local press.

Brazil sees rise in monthly cement sales

Preliminary data and market estimates show that cement sales in Brazil during October reached 6.5Mt, a 4.7 per cent YoY increase from the same period of last year. Data from local cement association SNIC shows that over the first nine months of the year, sales totalled 58.9Mt, a YoY increase of 2.4 per cent. For the 12 months between November 2012-October 2013, sales reached 69.7Mt, representing an increase of 2.2 per cent on the comparative period of the previous year.

Vicem sees significant rise in exports in first 10 months

In the first 10 months, Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) sales rose by 9.2 per cent YoY to 17.65Mt, including a significant rise in exports. Of the total, 15.84Mt was sold in the domestic market, while 1.8Mt was exported, up 4.8 per cent and 74.2 per cent YoY, respectively. Staff at Pertigalete, Cementos Venezuela’s largest plant, have declared an “operational emergency” as the seven kilns have stopped producing clinker. Southern Province signs contract for new line at Bisha works

Southern Province Cement Co's (SPCC) has signed a contract for the construction of a second production line at its Bisha cement works in Saudi Arabia, the company said in a bourse filing. The new production line will be built by Chinese contractor CNBM at a cost of SAR713m (US$190.1m) and take 20 months to complete. SPC said it will use a combination of Islamic financing and own funds to finance the project.
