US shipments edge ahead in 2011

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for December 2011 were 4.8Mt. This was 16% higher than shipments in December 2010.Although sales continued a trend of increases begun in May, the exceptionally large increase in December was in part because of unexpectedly mild weather conditions. Saudi Arabia removes restrictions on cement imports

Saudi Arabia removed restrictions on cement imports to secure extra supplies at a stable price, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said. “There are no restrictions on cement imports currently,” according to a statement posted on the Ministry’s website. Cement exports have already been halted and plants have been ordered to operate at full capacity. The kingdom’s western region has suffered a cement shortages as the government has increased infrastructure spending, Bloomberg reports....

Iran cement exports rise 17 per cent

Iran exported over 9.3Mt of cement in the first 11 months of the year (ends 19 March 2012), representing a 17 per cent YoY rise, IRNA news agency reported. Clinker exports during the period were 1.5Mt. Iran’s cement production capacity currently stands at 74Mt, Iranian Minster of Industry, Mine and Trade, Mehdi Ghazanfari, recently said. Chavez authorises investment, company name change

Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chávez has authorised VEF43m (US$10m) to build a new quarry for cement production. The executive also approved changing the name of Cemex Venezuela to Venezolana de Cementos as well as measure to develop and strengthen the firm, according to a release from the national assembly. Last year, Cemex received US$600m in compensation from the Venezuelan government  for nationalization of the cement prouducer’s local works.

Southern Province new line begins production, Saudi Arabia

Southern Province Cement (SPC) said the production line at its Tuhama plant started commercial production last week. The new 5000tpd line brings the Tuhama plant capacity to 10,000tpd and SPC’s total capacity to 23,000tpd. Last month the company announced the launch of trial productions at its new line, SeeNews Middle East and Africa reports.

Ambuja production rises 11.28%, India

Ambuja Cements reported an 11.28 per cent rise in production in February 2012 to 1.99Mt from 1.79Mt in February 2011. Meanwhile, dispatches reached 2Mt compared with 1.77Mt the year before, representing a rise of 12.74 per cent. For the first two months of the current calendar year, cement production and dispatches were 3.9Mt and 3.92Mt, respectively compared with 3.64Mt and 3.61Mt in the same period of 2011.

New UK construction orders fall more than 15%

Siam Cement plans Indonesian cement plant investment

Siam Cement Group (SCG) plans to build a new cement plant in Indonesia to capitalize on the country's rapidly growing demand for construction materials, the Jakarta Globe reports. Kan Trakulhoon, president and chief executive officer of SCG, told reporters on Friday that the company would invest US$300m in a cement plant in Sukabumi, West Java. Cochin port invites tenders for new bagging plant, India

The Cochin Port Trust (CPT), India, has invited tenders for the establishment of a cement bagging plant, the Times of India reports. The port will lease six acres of land for a period of 30 years near the Q5 berth at Ernkaulam Wharf for the new plant.  The berth has a draft of 10 meters and rail tracks pass very close to it.
