Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) sold 2.11Mt of cement and clinker in the first two months of this year, falling 12.2 per cent from a year earlier, the corporation said on its website. China cement output rises 4.8%

Cement production from China rose by 4.8 per cent in the first two months of 2012 to reach 216Mt. However, growth slowed by 4.3 percentage points from the same period last year, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) reported. In February, the average cement price was CNY376.5/t down, down CNY31 from December 2011 but up CNY5.5/t YoY.

Semapa announces Brazil investments

Semapa, a Portuguese holding company that controls cement maker Secil, will invest about EUR300m (US$394m) in Brazil’s cement industry, Diario Economico reported, citing the prospectus of Semapa’s bond sale. Semapa will invest about EUR240m in a new plant in Brazil after it agreed to buy a 50 per cent stake in Supremo Cimento SA, the Portuguese newspaper said, citing the document for the planned sale of as much as EUR150m of Semapa bonds. Saudi Arabia sets prices

Saudi Arabia has set  the factory price of cement at SAR12/bag (US$3.20) and the retail price at SAR14/bag, the Saudi Press Agency reported, citing Minister of Commerce and Industry Tawfiq al-Rabea. The price of bulk cement has been fixed at SAR240/t, it said. Bangladesh manufacturers and exporters of cement, salt and stone have reported YoY growth of 46.33 per cent in the first eight months of FY2011-12 (July-February). Holcim Lanka Ltd is beginning to use agricultural waste to generate power in the cement manufacturing process. Construction of Dangote Cement’s new US$365m cement plant in Masaiti District is progressing well and on schedule, logistics manager Kampewa Nundwe told the Times of Zambia.
