In January the prices of construction materials in Venezuela increased 2.5 per cent largely as a result from a rise in prices in the steel and cement sectors. A recent rise in power tariffs by over 40 per cent has resulted in the price of Tanzanian building materials starting to also increase. A spot survey by local newspaper, ‘Daily News’ on Tursday showed that the price of Twiga cement sold by Tanzania Portland Cement Company (TPCC) has risen to between TZS14,500 and TZS15,500 per 50kg bag, depending on the location. Chettinad Cement will commission a 2.5Mta cement plant in North Karnataka in the current year and has finalised plans to expand into Andhra Pradesh, Business Line of India reports. Saudi Cement in talks to sell extra clinker supplies

Saudi Cement has said that due to the rising demand for cement in the Kingdom, it has started negotiating with a number of local producers for the sale of excess quantities of clinker. The company announced that since 4 February it has been in talks to sell as much as 600,000t of extra clinker supplies as local producers are benefiting from increased government spending.

US November shipments up 5%

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for November 2011 were 6.2Mt, data from the US Geological Survey showed. This was 5% higher than shipments in November 2010. Shipments for the year through November were 67.3 Mt, slightly higher than those of the same period in 2010. The leading producing states in November were Texas, California, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, in descending order and accounted for about 42% of the total production....

Indian companies post January rise

UltraTech Cement, said shipments in January rose 11.2 per cent to 3.72Mt. Production increased 11.7 per cent to 3.78Mt the company, part of India's Aditya Birla Group, said in a statement. Meanwhile, Ambuja Cements, part of the Holcim Group, reported sales rose in January to 1.91Mt, up 3.8 per cent compared to the same month last year (1.84Mt). Production volumes also rose during the month to 1.9Mt compared to 1.84Mt  in January 2011.
