Votorantim not seeking to sell Cimpor stake

Brazilian cement maker Votorantim Cimentos is not willing to divest its stake in Cimpor  as this would allow its home competitor Camargo Correa to boost its holding in the Portuguese sector firm, economic daily Diario Economico reported on Thursday. South Africa sales down 12.4% in February

Cement sales in SA moved 12.4% lower YoY in February to 736,691t from 840,586t at the same month in 2010, data from South Africa’s Cement and Concrete Institute showed. Cement sales had declined 4.6% YoY in January. Domestic sales on a year-to-date basis declined 9.1% to 1.375Mt, from 1.513Mt for the same period in 2010. The moving annual total in SA was down 6.8% y/y in February 2011 to 10.732Mt from 11.521Mt in February 2010.

Spanish cement producers have announced a price hike for 2011, a move that is being viewed positively in light of the weak pricing environment experienced by local producers in 2010.

Argentina sales rise 15.6% YoY

According to provisional data from the Association of Portland Cement Manufacturers (AFCP), domestic  shipments totaled 819,655t in February 2011, 3.7 per cent less than in January 2011 but 18.4 per cent above the February 2010 figure. Members of the nomadic Bedouin Arab tribe, have forced their way into Sinai Cement Co’s plant in northern Sinai and shut down production, a Bedouin spokesman and the company’s chairman said. China Resources Cement Holdings Ltd said Monday its plans to expand its production capacity by around one third in 2011 in anticipation of higher selling prices and rising demand.
