Industry: Holcim Vietnam speeds up US$28m waste heat-to-power project

Holcim Cement Co Ltd Vietnam is speeding up preparations for construction of a waste heat-to-power plant in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang. "The plant will cost US$28m, including US$10m used for maintenance," Gerhard Schutz, Holcim’s general director,  said. The facility in Kien Luong district is slated for operation in August 2012. Lafarge Cement Plc says increasing local and regional construction activity in the Democratic Republic of Congo is likely to improve the company’s performance after lower cement volumes slowed its profits by 23% last year. Cong Thanh Joint Stock Company has begun construction of a 600MW coal-fired power plant in the central province of Thanh Hoa in the presence of Vietnamese deputy prime minister Hoang Trung Hai. To help bring down the soaring cement price before year’s end, the Dangote Group, which owns Ibeshe Cement plant in Ogun State, has hinted that the plant will be ready for commissioning in June. The first product from Ohorongo Cement plant located at Otavi, Namibia is already on the market. Currently, only two cement grades are on the shelves –  32.5 and 42.5.
