New plant for Azerbaijan to be signed

The contract for the construction of a new cement plant by Ghizildash Cement is set to be signed in Baku between Azerbaijan’s Norm Ltd and a Chinese company in a matter of days, Azer Press reported. Construction of the new cement plant is expected be started in late April and completed in May 2012. It is slated to have a cement capacity of 2Mta.

Siam Cement’s net soars 54%, Thailand

Siam Cement’s consolidated net profit jumped 54 per cent to THB37.38bn (US$1.2bn) last year mainly on higher earnings from its chemical and paper businesses and its investments. Illinois cement recalls workers, USA

 Illinois Cement has called back the 96 employees laid off in January.
 “We’re calling everybody back, beginning tomorrow,” company president Wayne Emmer said Monday afternoon. Employees who had been laid off Jan. 8 received calls beginning around Feb. 14 that they would be needed this week at the plant.
 “We won’t be starting the kiln until approximately the second week of March… It’s not the kind of system where you can just push a button to start it,” Emmer said.

Secil workers strike on wage protest, Portugal

Workers at Portuguese cement producer Secil’s Setabul plant have taken strike action as wage increases have been denied by management.  The strike began at 8pm and extended until the same time on Wednesday.

Mexican group Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua,  partner of the Bolivian company Soboce, announced yesterday that it expected a compensation of $ 93 million for its shares in the Fabrica Nacional de Cemento SA (Fancesa) expropriated by the government in favour of the governor of Chuquisaca in September last year.
