Truckers strike to impact Ambuja margins, India

Ambuja Cements Ltd is facing adverse impact on its profit margins due to the strike by transporters in Himachal Pradesh. Transporters associated with Suli and Rauri plants are demanding higher rates. The plants have a capacity to produce 3Mt of cement. Ambuja Cements has increased the despatches by 20 per cent in October 2010 despite the strike.

Siam Cement chief expects economy to grow 4-5% next year

Siam Cement president Kan Trakulhoon on Thursday projected that the Thai economy will expand 4-5 per cent next year, which could contribute to the higher growth of both the agricultural and cement business sectors.

Portland plans Uganda factory

Kenya’s East African Portland Cement (EAPCC) will set up a factory in Uganda next year. The plans follow shareholders’ approval to transform what has been a distribution centre into a fully-fledged operation. Mark Karbolo, EAPCC chairman, said the operation would be a subsidiary of EAPCC Kenya, and operate as EAPCC Uganda. Brazil sees 13.5% domestic sales rise

Preliminary data industry data and market estimates indicate that accumulated domestic cement sales over the 12 months from November 2009-October 2010  reached 57.9Mt, up 13.5 per cent YoY (November 2008-October 2009). Cimpor to place US$150m bonds on North-American market

Portuguese cement producer Cimpor will issue bonds worth US$150m in the North-American market. The private placement will be carried out by the wholly-owned subsidiary Cimpor Financial Operations BV, the company said in a filing with Portugal’s bourse regulator CMVM yesterday. Arabian Cement Company (ACC) registered a 5.6% year-on-year decline in its net profit for the nine months through September 2010 to SAR 244.6m (US$65.2m), compared to SAR 259.2m  a year ago. The decrease was chiefly due to a decline in average sales prices and despite the higher sales during the nine-month period, ACC said without giving exact figures.
