Chinese steel and cement output to rise as power limits ease

China International Capital Corp said China production of steel and cement will increase next year, weighing on prices as power supplies are restored, according to a Bloomberg report.

The publication of cement and concrete sales statistics, which were banned by the Competition Commission when it launched an investigation into anti-competitive practices in the cement industry, are to resume. Argentine cement producer Loma Negra will invest US$80m this year to expand its local production capacity, local paper El Cronista reported. Portuguese cement maker Cimentos de Portugal SA, or Cimpor, said Thursday it will invest €240m in Brazil by 2013 to increase its annual cement production capacity in the South American country to 8.8Mt from 6.5Mt. Algerian cement production by government-owned plants grew by 7% at the end of October 2010, officials said Thursday at Groupe industriel des ciments d’Algérie (Gica).

Montezuma cement plant inaugurated, Mexico

Gov. Fidel Herrera Beltran on Saturday inaugurated Cementos Montezuma’s cement plant in the municipality of Apazapan, Veracruz. According to El Golfo, the plant had an investment of US$265m and will cater for markets in the centre and south of the country. Cementos Moctezuma, Apazapan plant plans to produce 1.23Mt of cement.

China prices soar due to energy cuts

Cement prices in China have risen to record highs as curbs on electricity supplies by local governments affect output.  The production disruption, despite being temporary, has seen the average price of cement reached CNY400/t (US$60/t). In some regions such as the east of the country, prices have rocketed to CNY500/t (US$75/t). The east is reported to have seen overall price increases of some 40% since August.

Athi River Mining, Kenya’s third-largest cement maker, will double its cement production capacity in early 2011, after it upgrades an existing plant and builds a new one, Chief Executive Officer Pradeep Paunrana reports.
