Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan remained among major importers of Vietnamese clinker and cement in the first four months of this year, the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade said. Cemex announced yesterday that it is undertaking a new US$300m investment in the Philippines involving the construction of a new 1.5Mta line at is Solid Plant in Luzon. Philippine conglomerate Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc said on Friday it had signed an agreement for a possible acquisition of Lafarge's local cement operations in partnership with CRH Plc. Cemex Philippines has inaugurated a new PHP3bn (US$67.3m) cement mill at its Apo Cement plant in Naga City, Cebu, as part of its comprehensive expansion plan in the country. Philippine first-quarter cement sales up 9.6%

Philippine cement sales grew 9.6 per cent in the first quarter from a year ago to 5.7Mt, latest statistics from the Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) show. Growth was attributed to demand from projects being undertaken by the public and private sectors. Lafarge Republic Incorporated (LRI) inaugurated a new cement mill in its Teresa plant, Rizal, the Philippines, on Wednesday. Bangladesh, Indonesia and Taiwan were the top importers of Vietnamese clinker and cement in the first two months of this year, the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade said. Holcim Philippines posted another record performance last year with a double-digit rise in sales on the back of strong and private infrastructure spending. The company said that its net income rose by 13 per cent to PHP5.14bn from the previous year’s PHP4.55bn. Cement prices in the Philippines are set to rise by PHP10/40kg bag shortly, according to separate advisory statements issued by three domestic producers to local distributors. Cemex Corp, Lafarge and Eagle Cement have each notified distibutors of the impending rise, the Manila Standard reported yesterday.
