Penden Cement gear box failure sees output falter

Cement production at Penden Cement Authority Ltd (PCAL) in Gomtu, Samtse, Bhutan, was affected last month as a gearbox in one of the two coal mills broke down. The gearbox failed on 21 April. While in-house repairs were carried out, enabling the plant to resume operations after four days, further issues occurred on 16 May and to date PCAL has been unable to repair the gearbox. Pakistan cement output up 6.6% YoY

Argentine cement market expands 9% YoY in May

Argentina’s cement demand increased 9.8 per cent YoY to 967,695t, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. The rise in consumption is mainly attributable to an increase in bulk cement, which was up 28 per cent YoY, offsetting a three per cent dip in bagged sales. Colombian grey cement deliveries slipped 0.6 per cent YoY to 0.999Mt in May 2017, according to DANE, the country’s statistics office. Peru’s cement demand reached 774,000t in May, reflecting a two per cent drop YoY, according to Asocem, the country’s cement association. Total deliveries, including exports, decreased 2.8 per cent to 797,000t. Domestic production in May fell 6.4 per cent YoY to 781,000t. Sagar Cements is expecting around 18 per cent jump in its production to 2.6Mt in FY17-18 following the consolidation of a grinding unit acquired last year. Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City has proposed Vietnam's Ministry of Construction to adjust its cement development plan, so that no new cement projects will be licensed in the metropolis and existing plants will be relocated. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico in March 2017 were about 7.5Mt, slightly less than sales in March 2016, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported yesterday. Vietnam produced 33.6Mt of cement in the first five months of this year, up 8.1 per cent from a year earlier, including 7.7Mt in May, up 12.1 per cent, according to latest data of the government-run General Statistics Office. In the first four months, Vietnamese cement producers manufactured 25.9Mt of cement, according to the office’s revised figure. In April 2017 cement consumption in Colombia fell 14.9 per cent to 0.9Mt from 1.058Mt in April 2017, according to Colombia’s statistics office, Dane.
