Clinker shipment capsizes in Bay of Bengal
10 September 2018

A light vessel carrying 1500t of clinker capsized near Bhasanchar if Noakhali in the Bay of Bengal on 9 September. All 13 members of the MV Sheikh Parvin were rescued, said Mohammed Selim, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, based in Chittagong.

The vessel had been bound for Narayanganh and strong currents led to the clinker shipment colliding with another vessel, called the Basundhara-27, that had already run aground.

There are several grinding units located in Narayanganj, including Akij Cement Company Ltd's 0.14Mta plant, Siam City Cement (Bangladesh) Ltd's 0.55Mta works and Unique Cement Industries Ltd's 4.3Mta facility.
