Loma Negra to shut Sierras Bayas plant

Argentine cement producer Loma Negra has announced it will close its Sierras Bayas plant, the oldest cement production facility in the country. The plant, which is a century old, operated as a grinding and dispatch facility since 2001, when a domestic downturn in the market led to the shutdown of its kiln. Argentina records 6% fall in dispatches for August

Argentina has recorded a 5.8 per cent YoY decrease in cement dispatches to 1.052Mt for August 2019, compared with 1.117Mt in the year-ago period. Domestic dispatches fell to 1.047Mt from 1.113Mt, while exports declined to 4230t from 4611t in August 2018. The country’s demand was met by domestic production and as such, no imports were recorded for the month.

Argentina-based Loma Negra reported a 2.2 per cent YoY drop in 2Q net revenue to ARS7.47bn (US$165m) while consolidated adjusted EBITDA increased 7.1 per cent YoY to ARS1.929bn, according to Wall Street Online. Total cement consumption in Argentina in July 2019 increased 5.1 per cent YoY to 1,000,711t, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. Loma Negra reports fire at L'Amalí plant

Argentina’s Loma Negra has reported that a fire broke out in an auxiliary building of the second line at its L'Amalí plant, Olavarría, last Thursday night. The line is still under construction, however the cause of the incident is yet to be determined. The company has noted that no significant impacts are expected and the plant will operate normally to serve its customers, according to a press release.

Holcim Argentina to replace 35% of energy with wind power

Holcim Argentina has signed a contract with YPF Luz to replace 35 per cent of its conventionally-sourced energy with wind power. This translates to 142,000Mwh per annum of demand, which YPF Luz will supply from its 30MW Los Teros wind farm. The Argentine cement market contracted by 11.4 per cent YoY to 860,631Mt in June, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP.
