US Portland and blended cement demand up 19% in April

Portland and blended cement shipments, including imports, in the USA and Puerto Rico, saw a 19 per cent YoY increase to 9.7Mt in April 2021, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The leading cement-consuming states were Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Ohio, who accounted for a combined share of 40 per cent of total shipments. Cemento Rocafuerte opens Belize's first cement plant

Cemento Rocafuerto, a subsidiary of Guatemala-based Cemento Progreso, has opened Belize’s first cement plant at Mile 34 of the George Price Highway, near the capital Belmopan, in the presence of the country’s Prime Minister, John Briceño. LafargeHolcim subsidiary Holcim México saw the commissioning of its new 0.65Mta grinding plant in Umán, Yucatán. The Umán plant will be supplied with clinker from production facilities in Macuspana, Tabasco, and Orizaba, Veracruz. Cement sales in Dominican Republic decline 5% in 2020

Cement sales in the Dominican Republic fell by five per cent to 4,446,706t in 2020 from 4,703,347t in 2019, according to the country’s cement association, Adocem, in its newly-published 2020 annual report. Cement production declined 8.4 per cent to 5,168,969t in 2020 from 5,644,176t in the previous year. This represents a capacity utilisation rate of 74.6 per cent, down from 81.5 per cent in 2019. Cement sales in Puerto Rico up 12% in May

In May 2021 cement sales in Puerto Rico increased 12 per cent YoY to 59,266t, according to the country’s Economic Development Bank. In the first 11 months of the FY21 639,566t of cement were sold. This represents an advance of 39.2 per cent when compared to 460,487t sold in the 11MFY20, as well as the highest volume since 2014.  In 2020 sales in the Puerto Rican market rose 2.8 per cent YoY to 588,400t.

Caribbean cement importer Rock Hard Cement announced it will be increasing its price for cement from 1 July 2021. The company cited rising global prices along with the volatility of shipping in the second half of the year, according to the Daily Express. Cement prices in El Salvador increase in May

The price of a 42.5kg bag of cement in El Salvador, delivered ex-works increased by four per cent to US$7.87 in May 2021 when compared with May 2020, when the ex-work price stood at US$7.57/bag – a price level it held until April 2021. At retail level, prices rose 1.5 per cent YoY from US$8.53 per 42.5kg bag in May 2020 to US$8.66/bag in May 2021. Since the start of 2021 retail prices have steadily risen from US$8.36/bag in January to US$8.40 in April 2021.

Total shipments for Portland and blended cement, including imports in the USA and Puerto Rico advanced 16 per cent YoY to 9Mt in March 2021, reports the US Geological Survey (USGS). A total of 45 per cent of deliveries was supplied to the leading cement-consuming states – Texas, California, Floria, Georgia and Arizona.
