Land concessions for cement units cleared, India

The State Cabinet of Karnataka, India has cleared land concessions to eight cement factories, all to be located in and around Sedam and Chincholi in Gulbarga district. The total extent of lands approved for these projects is over 4,000 acres. Lafarge to use sewage pellets as new fuel

Lafarge Cement UK has announced it is applying to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) for permission to use Processed Sewage Pellets (PSP) as an additional waste-derived fuel at its Dunbar Works. The Works has already managed to replace 40 per cent of its annual coal usage each year with the established waste-derived fuels, tyres and Recycled Liquid Fuel (RLF). NY clears Lafarge as a mercury source

The New York State Department of Health has ruled out Lafarge as mercury source. On 27 June it sent letters notifying 12 of the 172 people who had undergone testing by the Harvard School of Public Health in May of 2010 that their mercury levels had been higher than normal.

While blood mercury levels were higher than 5 g/mL in some individuals,  the DOH letter stated, “Finding mercury in the blood at this level is not uncommon.”

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)’s Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) has published the third version of its Cement CO2 and Energy Protocol. This protocol provides a harmonised methodology for calculating CO2 emissions, with a view to report these emissions transparently. Sri Lanka Tokyo Cement in power sale deal

Sri Lanka’s Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) has signed a deal with the state power utility, Ceylon Electricity Board, to sell electricity from a 6MW biomass power plant it plans to build. Net annual electricity generation from the plant would be around 37, 230MWh which will be supplied to the national grid, it said in a stock exchange filing. The power plant will take 18 months to build and commissioning and test runs are to start by mid-2013.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Friday set aside an order of the National Environment Appellate Authority (NEAA), which had quashed the environment clearance for a proposed cement plant to be set up Lafarge, at Karsog in Mandi district.
