The US Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration announced that Cemex de Puerto Rico has agreed to pay US$291,722 in penalties and implement enhanced safety measures at its three MSHA-regulated facilities in Puerto Rico. US January shipments - preliminary data

Preliminary data from the US Geological Survey shows that Portland and blended cement shipments in January 2016 amounted to 5.3Mt, including 540,000t of imports. This represents a fall of 1.6 per cent on January 2015 but is well above the five-year average of 4.6Mta for January shipments in the period 2011-15. US November shipments - preliminary data

Preliminary data from the US Geological Survey shows that Portland and blended cement shipments in November 2015 reached 7.3Mt including 767,000t of imports. Shipments for the year to the end of November totalled 84.93Mt, the provisional data shows. Of the total, imports represented 8.93Mt. Clinker production in November was 6.76Mt and for the first 11 months of 2015 reached 69.62Mt, according to the preliminary figures.

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico in October 2015 were about 9.3Mt, down by 2.2 per cent from the level in October 2014, data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) shows. Portland and blended cement shipments in the US and Puerto Rico amounted to 9.32Mt in October, according to preliminary data by the US Geological Survey (USGS). Of the total, imports accounted for 1.027Mt of shipments. Over the first 10 months of the year, shipments reached 77.49Mt, including 8.06Mt of imports. Clinker production in October is reported to be 6.88Mt, and for the year to date amounted to 62.82Mt.

Puerto Rican cement sales down 14.4% YoY in Oct

Cement sales in Puerto Rico fell to 1085m bags in October, representing a 14.4 per cent YoY fall, the largest in the past nine months. The reduction has been attributed to a contraction in housing construction and a lack of government resources invested in public works. Domestic cement production decreased 22.5 per cent to 872m of bags. In 2014, production fell 1.9 per cent following two years of increases.

The US Environmental Protection Agency announced that Cemex Puerto Rico will spend an estimated US$1.7m on pollution control measures to reduce NOx emissions from its plant in Ponce. In addition, the company will pay a US$160,000 penalty for Clean Air Act violations.
