Ethiopia to import 150,000t of cement

According to the Head of Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA), Ziad Wolde Gabriel, the first ship carrying cement has arrived at Djibouti Port. He made the statement at a consultative meeting the authority made with local contractors Ghion Hotel, yesterday (January 4, 2011).

The 4% hike in freight charges for cement, proposed by the Indian Railways, is expected to result in a 1-2% hit in the operating margins of cement makers. Cement imports from Pakistan into India are on a decline, thanks to the non-renewal of their quality licence by the Bureau of India Standards (BIS). In the July-November period this year, Pakistan’s cement exports to India were down by 34 per cent to 183,026t. In 2009-10 (July-June), Pakistan had exported 722,967t. Philippine rulers pushed to cut cement tariffs

The Philippine Trade Department is again trying to get the Presidential Palace to eliminate tariffs on imported wheat and cement while Congress is in recess in a bid to lower product prices, a ranking official said. Flour millers have had to pay a 3-5% levy on wheat starting Aug. 26 after Executive Order 863, which temporarily brought down this tariff to zero, lapsed. Lafarge extends transport contract with Europorte

Lafarge has renewed for three years its transport contract with Europorte, a unit of Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnel. Under the current agreement, signed three years ago, Europorte organises four transfers weekly between Dunkirk and Le Havre and provides unloading of trains at Lafarge’s cement plant located in Le Havre. Europorte carries slag, a raw material for producing cement, between the site of French company Moulins du Littoral in Dunkirk and the Le Havre site of Lafarge.
