Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) said it made a net profit of VND660trn (US$31.62bn) in 2012, rising by 36 per cent from a year earlier, despite a fall in domestic demand and economic difficulties. Domestic cement sales in Switzerland saw a 6.2 per cent decline in 2012, latest data from the domestic cement association, Cemsuisse shows. For full year 2012, domestic sales reached 4.395Mt compared to 4.687Mt in 2011. The country was affected by a long period of adverse weather conditions during the spring which led to first quarter deliveries being down by 22 per cent. Total cement sales in Vietnam (domestic plus exports) in 2012 fell 3.5 per cent YoY to 54Mt. A recent update by the Vietnam Cement Association (VNCA) shows domestic sales were down 7.71 per cent YoY to 45.5Mt during the year as a frozen real estate market hurt local demand. Tunisia has reported a double-digit rise in cement sales for the first 11 months of 2012 while exports saw a significant drop over the same period. Domestic sales rose by 11.6 per cent during January-November 2012 to 6.559Mt from 5.875Mt recorded in the first 11 months of 2011. Fiji Industries Ltd (FIL) has denied claims made by the special administrator of Suva City Council (SCC) of a cement shortage. Pakistan has recorded a rise in domestic cement sales in the first half of the current fiscal but export levels continue to remain under pressure. State-owned Indonesian cement producer PT  Semen Gresik achieved record production last year and targets further increases this year, according to a senior member of the company. Cement production rose 18 per cent in 2012 to 22.6Mt and revenue is expected to hit IDR19trn (US$2bn). “We hit a record in terms of production,” said the company’s president director Dwi Soetjipto in Gresik early this week.
