South Africa 9M12 sales rise 2.9%

South Africa cement sales for the first nine months of 2012 rose 2.9 per cent to 8.529Mt from 8.290Mt in the same period of 2011, latest data from the Cement & Concrete Institute (C&CI) shows. The moving annual total also rose 3.9 per cent to 11.473Mt from 11.038Mt in the corresponding period a year a go. However, 3Q12 sales were down 3.8 per cent to 2.976Mt compared to 3.092Mt in the 3Q11.

Further double-digit gains forecast for Indonesian demand

Indonesian cement consumption is expected to rise between 10-12 per cent in 2013, driven by developments in the property and infrastructure sector, according to estimates by the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI). Iran cement production rises 5.85% in first nine months of the year

Iran produced 53.16Mt in the first nine months of the current Iranian year (beginning 20 March 2012), representing a 5.85 per cent increase on the 51.65Mt produced in the same period of last year. Algerian Jan-Nov12 imports increase 92%

The first 11 months of 2012 saw Algeria increase its cement imports by 91.95 per cent, according to Algerian customs figures. In terms of value, imports rose from US$117.4m to US$225.4m while in terms of volumes, the advance reached 96.61 per cent from 1.267Mt to 2.492Mt. The high demand for the product, particularly in the dry season from March to August, has been the main cause of this import hike. The country currently has a cement deficit of over 2.5Mta.

Pakistan cement manufacturer Al-Abbas Cement Industries Ltd (AACIL) is to change its name to Power Cement Limited, the company said in a filing to the Karachi Stock Exchange. Bolivia’s government and local cement producers have agreed to raise cement production by 17 per cent next year, taking the current figure of 3Mta to 3.5Mta. French cement consumption rises 5% in October

French cement demand increased by five per cent YoY to 1.904Mt in October, data from association Syndicat Français de l'Industrie Cimentière (SFIC) shows. Domestic producers advanced sales by 4.5 per cent to 1.762Mt when compared with October 2011 while importers increased their deliveries by nearly 11 per cent from 0.128Mt to 0.142Mt. Spanish cement and building materials producer Sociedad de Cementos y Materiales de Construccion de Andalucia, is reportedly planning to lay-off 35 members of staff. The company, which is controlled by Portuguese cement major Cimpor, is currently negotiating with its employees and trade unions, according to reports by Expansión. Spanish cement association Oficemen expects consumption to reduce by 33 per cent in 2012  per cent in 2013 , the fifth double-digit decline in a row.
