CAC disappointed by BC government inaction

The Cement Association of Canada (CAC) has expressed its extreme disappointment with the decision by the British Columbia (BC) government not to change how the carbon tax is applied to the cement sector in its 2014 budget. Lacklustre start to year for Spain

Spanish cement producers can only hope for a better 2014 as demand figures for January 2014 show a 13.6 per cent fall to 764,011t, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. However, the rate of market contraction appears to be slowing somewhat. Over the past 12 months, consumption fell by 18.7 per cent. But recovery seems some time away as the result is worse than predicted. Oficemen had indicated in December that it expects a 7-8 per cent decrease for 2014.

Buzzi in strategic agreement with W&P Cementi

Buzzi Unicem is paying some EUR22m for a 25 per cent stake in Salonit Anhovo, the leading cement producer in Slovenia with an capacity approaching 1.4Mta and for a 25 per cent interest in Wietersdorfer & Peggauer's Italian subsidiary W&P Cementi.  As part of the same deal, Buzzi Unicem is receiving EUR22m from W&P Cementi for the Italian cement major’s 0.3Mta cement works at Cadola (Italy) and the right to acquire the 0.4Mta Travesio (Italy) cement plant within the next five years.   ...

Eurocement, the largest building materials group in Russia and the CIS states, reported a five per cent YoY increase in cement deliveries last year, exceeding 2012’s level by 1Mt. Suez Cement inaugurates waste treatment plant

Suez Cement, part of the Italcementi group, inaugurated its first waste treatment plant in Egypt on Sunday with investments totalling around EUR5m. The project is part of the Egyptian-based company's strategy to increase the amount of energy from waste derived fuels. It will use around 45,000t of household waste to produce 35,000tpa of alternative fuel. Saudi sales slowdown continues through Jan

The slowdown in Saudi Arabian cement sales continued in January 2014, falling short of analysts expectations. Cement deliveries amounted to 4.62Mt in the first month of the year, compared to 4.74Mt the month before, a recent report by NBK Capital has said. Brazil Jan cement sales rise 6.8% YoY

Preliminary data and market estimates show that Brazilian cement sales increased by 6.8 per cent in January 2014 to 5.9Mt, latest data from local cement association SNIC shows.  Sales for the 12 months between February 2013 – January 2013 totaled 79.4Mt, representing an increase of 2.5 per cent compared to the comparative period of the previous year (February 2012 – January 2013).

PPC set to enter the Algerian cement market

Italian cement major Buzzi Unicem saw turnover decline by 2.1 per cent last year to EUR2754m as the company saw another fall in its domestic market of Italy, but Russia and the US were its best performers.
