Leading Indian cement companies are planning major expansion including setting up new plants in Rajasthan. According to sources the state government has received investment proposals worth INR10,000 crore from various manufacturers. “Leading cement companies like Grasim, Lafarge India, Aditya Cement, Birla Corporation, Shree Cement, JK Cement, etc have pledged investment of INR10,000 crore in the state. Yemen to see first Saudi factory opened in Hadramout

Saudi investors on Wednesday will open a US$260m cement factory with a production capacity of 1.5Mta in the eastern part of Yemen. China plans to eliminate 300Mt of obsolete cement capacity over the next three years as part of its effort to address oversupply, according to a draft document that will be submitted for regulatory approval, the China Securities Journal reported. After a dip in February, the Indian cement industry is likely to achieve double-digit growth in March as demand for cement remains strong. On the back of demand from the infrastructure and realty sector, producers continued selling higher volumes of cement. Ambuja Cements Ltd plans to invest INR42bn to raise its annual production capacity plans to 3Mt over the next 20 months, a source said. Construction spending in February was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of US$846.2bn - 1.3% below the revised January estimate of $857.8bn, the US Commerce Department announced April 1 2010. The figure is 12.8% below the February 2009 estimate of US$970.4bn.
