Vietnam to see 13 new operations go on line this year

The Ministry of Construction and the Vietnam Cement Association have announced that an additional of 13 cement production lines, with a designed capacity of 11.7Mt will be completed in 2010.  When these production lines are put into operation, the cement industry will have a total capacity of nearly 70Mta. However, the cement supply will be redundant in the following years as consumer demand is expected to increase by 10-15 per cent this year.

Japan producers to reduce domestic output 20-30%

Japanese producers are moving to reduce excess production capacity in Japan, with industry leader Taiheiyo Cement Corp and No. 4 firm Ube Industries Ltd planning cuts of 30% and 20%, respectively, The Nikkei reported on Thursday. The executive director of Adwenpa Construction and Engineering Services Limited, Mr. Julius Kwaku Ankomah on Wednesday announced that a cement factory will soon be constructed at Winneba in the Effutu District of the Central Region.   According to Mr Ankomah the plant will have a capacity to produce 3000tpd. Producers in north India are likely to hike prices up to 5% or Rs10-12/50kg bag early next month, the second time this year, on the back of robust infrastructure construction. Lafarge reported a loss in the fourth quarter as construction in Europe and the U.S. struggled to recover, and predicted a rebound in its markets this year. The net loss was EUR38m (US$51.1m), compared with net income of EUR40m a year earlier, the company said in a statement today. Guatemalan cement firm Cementos Progreso inaugurated its new lime plant in northeastern El Progreso department, the energy and mining ministry said in a release. The expansion of the plant cost US$23.2m. "This will allow us to double our lime production from 180,000tpa to 360,000tpa," the company’s lime unit manager Peter Klose was quoted as saying by local paper Siglo XXI.
