Czech cement production down 23%

Cement production in the Czech Republic decreased by 23 percent year-on-year to 3.64Mt last year and exports of building materials sank by nearly a third to 438,461t, according to the Association of Cement Producers’ latest data. Shiva Cement today announced that the dispatch of cement and clinker during the month January 10 was down by 3.8% in comparison to Jan `09 due to temporary drop in production. However, despatches during Apr’09-Jan’10 were up by 39.7% in comparison to same period of previous year.

Oman’s Raysut Cement, the sultanate’s largest cement producer by market value, is planning a bid to buy Star Cement Group of Companies, it said in a statement on the country’s bourse website on Sunday. Ssangyong Cement Industrial Co, a South Korean cement maker, said Thursday it jumped back into the black last year, thanks to rising cement prices. Ssangyong Cement posted a net profit of 74.2 billion won (US$64.3 million) in 2009, compared with a loss of 168.7 billion won in 2008, the company said in a regulatory filing. Operating profit rose to 70.7 billion won last year on sales of 1.08 trillion won, according to the filing.

The Ministry of Construction has assigned Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) to produce between 18Mt and 18.5Mt of cement in 2010, up 6.76% from a year earlier.
