Holcim plan to downsize workers at Almeria plant, Spain

Holcim has presented a temporary downsizing plan for 34%, or 40 employees, at the company’s cement plant in Carboneras, the province of Almeria, southeastern Spain, the company’s sustainable development director for Spain, Manuel Soriano informed today Europa Press. Soriano explained the staff-cutting measure, which will last six months, with the flagging demand. Almeria’s plant currently employs a total 116 workers.

Camargo Cimentos to set up plant at Porto do Acu, Brazil

Camargo Correa Cimentos entered an agreement with LLX to set up a cement plant in the industrial area of Porto do Acu at Sao Joao da Barra (Rio de Janeiro). The project should receive a minimum investment of R$100m to run a 400,000tpa clinker capacity.

UltraTech to buy Samruddhi to form India’s No.1 cement firm

UltraTech Cement, a unit of Indian conglomerate Aditya Birla Group, is absorbing sister unit Samruddhi Cement, to form the country’s biggest cement firm, both companies said. State-run steel producer Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and mining major NMDC will invest INR260 crore in developing the Arki limestone reserves in Himachal Pradesh. Heidelberg seeks buyers for Hanson UK units

HeidelbergCement is looking for a buyer for its Hanson UK building products operations, including the country’s biggest supplier of clay bricks, in a bid to reduce debt.

The company said it is selling units outside of its cement, aggregate and concrete operations after running up debt with the UK£8bn takeover of Hanson in 2007. First-half disposals for the German cement producer have totalled EUR324m, including assets in Indonesia and Israel.

PT Semen Gresik, Indonesia’s largest cement producer by volume, said Friday that its cement sales for January-October were steady from a year earlier at 14.62Mt. Power shortage in Cebu is expected to ease when the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) gives the Visayan Electric Company (Veco) provisional authority to get additional power from a cement company.
