India cement demand slows in April

Indian cement demand seems to have tapered off in April. After a robust demand in February and March, Holcim group companies ACC and Ambuja Cement marginally added to inventories by selling less than what it had produced. The Central Java provincial administration said the construction of a cement plant of PT Semen Gresik in Sukolilo, Pati, will be started in May, writes the Antara News. Lafarge prepares to mothball Westbury factory, UK

Workers at Lafarge Cement Works in Westbury are preparing to bid goodbye to the firm which will shut down its manufacturing operations at the end of the week, reports the Wiltshire Times. The factory, which includes two kilns and an adjoining chalk pit, will be mothballed because of the downturn in the construction industry. The move has meant the loss of more than 60 jobs. The Podilskyi Cement Company (the town of Kamenets-Podilskyi, Khmelnytskyi region) ranking among Ukraine’s top three largest cement producers recorded a net profit of UAH 193.547 million in 2008, the company reported.
