Decision reserved over Oamaru cement plant, New Zealand

Appeals against resource consents granted to a proposed US$300m cement plant near Oamaru have concluded at the Environment Court. In 2008, the Waitaki District and Otago Regional councils approved the development at Weston, near Oamaru, subject to more than 1000 pages of conditions. The plant would produce 880,000tpa of cement, occupy an area 1km in length and have a chimney stack more than 100m high. Dragon Cement plant temporarily suspending production

The Dragon Cement plant in Thomaston is shutting down production for four to six weeks and temporarily laying off an undetermined number of workers.  Plant manager Ray DeGrass told the Bangor Daily News that the move is a result of the slowdown in the construction business.  "We’re completely full of inventory," DeGrass told the online publication Village Soup, which first reported the story.  About 20 percent of the plant’s workforce was laid off in January, leaving about 110 workers at...

Shortage of cement delays power projects in eastern India

UltraTech Cement does not intend to restraint its expansion plans even though the domestic market is likely to see overcapacity in the next few quarters, reports Business Standard. Kuwait Cement Company slipped into a net loss of KWD 8.94m (US$30.8m) in the first quarter of 2009, versus a net profit of KWD15.56m a year earlier, the company said yesterday in a filing to the Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE). The cement producer reported a loss per share (LPS) of 15.93 fils for the first three months of 2009, compared to earnings per share of 27.65 fils for the same period last year. The total assets declined to KWD 207.3m at end-March 2009 from KWD396.5m a year earlier.

Buzzi Unicem’s first quarter cement deliveries fell by 20.0% to 5.5Mt and the group ready-mixed concrete volume dropped by 20.4% to 3Mm³.  The turnover was down by 22.2% to €587.35m and the EBITDA fell by 74.1% to €39.33m with a €12.11m loss being incurred at the trading level, compared with a profit of €102.28m.
