Mexico: GCC results positive, helped by exchange rate

The results posted by Mexican cement maker Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC) in its latest quarterly report were helped by the current weaker exchange rate against the dollar, Mexico City-based financial group IXE analyst Patricio Rivera told BNamericas. GCC posted a 24% drop in net profits to US$116mn last year compared to US$153mn in 2007. Employees were told Monday that shutdown of operations will begin at the end of April and extend into the third quarter of this year. The plant employs about 110. Essroc North America told workers last month that it was conducting a study on whether there was enough business to keep the local plant operating. India production to grow by 8.1 per cent in FY10

Cement production in India is expected to grow by 8.1 per cent and demand is likely to rise by 7-7.5 per cent in FY 10, Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) has said. While there is no visible recovery in cement demand from the real estate sector, the rise in cement dispatches and consumption can be attributed to a healthy demand from the infrastructure construction, CMIE said in its monthly report here. China’s cement demand in 2009 is expected to reach 1.541bnt, up 6.3 per cent from 1.449bnt in 2008, said Guo Wenlong, an official with National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), at an annual cement market forum.
