Saudi Yanbu Cement net profit up to US$44.9m in 1Q08

Saudi cement producer Yanbu Cement Company (YCC) said on April 16, 2008 its net profit rose to SAR168.4m (US$44.9m) in the first quarter of 2008, up from SAR151.6m (US$40.4m) a year ago.   The increase was attributed to a 15.3 per cent YoY rise in operating profit.   Earnings per share (EPS) stood at SAR1.6 (US$0.43), up from US$1.44 (US$0.38).   In late July 2007, YCC said it was studying a project to renovate its kilns 1 and 2 and increase their capacity.   YCC posted a net profit of SAR6...

Taiheiyo Cement shares advance on report on price increases

Taiheiyo Cement Corp led gains in cement producers in Tokyo trading after the Nikkei newspaper reported prices rose 10 per cent this fiscal year on higher coal costs. Exports ban likely to cool down cement prices

Russia’s Cement production up 1.9% in 1Q08

Cement production in Russia went up 1.9%, to 11.3Mt, in the first quarter of 2008, according to the Federal State Statistics Service. In March, cement production went up 5.5 per cent YoY and 25.7% compared with February 2008.

Lafarge will announce a new cost-cutting plan at the end of 2008, the group’s Chief Executive Bruno Lafont says in an interview published Thursday in French business daily La Tribune.   The new plan will be implemented after the Excellence 2008 plan ends, to maintain the company’s momentum on the current plan, Lafont says. The plan will be significant and will enable further investments in innovation, he says.  

India March cement shipments up 8.5 per cent on YoY

Cement shipments in India rose 8.5 per cent in March from a year ago, the Cement Manufacturers’ Association’s Web site showed. Sales in March were 16.41Mt, compared with 15.12Mt in the year-ago period. Production rose 9.2 per cent to 16.37Mt last month, against 14.99Mt a year earlier. For the full year ending March 2008, cement shipments rose about eight per cent to 167.65Mt and production to 168.29Mt from a year ago.

Cementir gets green light for second Chinese plant

Vietnam producers propose import tax cuts to stabilise prices

Vietnamese cement makers have proposed the government slash import taxes on clinker and cement to 0% from 5% and 10%, respectively, in a bid to remain cement prices until the end of June under the instruction of the prime minister.   The taxes are expected to take effect for 2008 only.   The cement industry will import an estimate of 4.5 million tons of clinker this year to meet the country’s cement demand.
