South Africa cement sales fall 18.7% in March

Cement sales in South Africa fell 18.7 per cent YoY in March 2008 to 1.039Mt after growing by 6.6 per cent in 2007 to a record 14.124Mt, data supplied by the Cement and Concrete Institute showed on Wednesday. This followed an 11 per cent rise in 2006, a 11.6 per cent gain in 2005, a 17.4 per cent surge in 2004 and a 7.0 percent climb in 2003. China’s Anhui Conch receives approval for A-share issue plan

Anhui Conch Cement said it received final approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission on April 3 for its plan to issue up to 200m additional A-shares. In June 2007, the company announced the issue, which will help fund 32 cement and power generation projects costing 12.04 bln yuan.

Shui On plans 20Mt cement output for ’08

Shui On Construction and Materials Ltd chairman Lo Hong-Sui says cement sales volume will continue to increase in 2008 as three new production lines will start operation in the year. Shui On can increase cement production output to 20Mt in 2008. It will have three new cement production lines starting operation, adding production capacity of 1.5Mt. Holcim hopes Venezuela nationalisation talks please both sides

Holcim plans EUR82.7m investment in Serbian plant

Holcim plans to raise the capacity of one of its Serbian units from 2200t to 4000t of clinker from under a EUR82.7m (US$130m) investment plan.     The Novi Popovac cement plant produced 841,500t of cement and 40,000t of the masonry mortar brand Novimal, while  Holcim’s Belgrade factory sold 33,000m3 of concrete in 2007.

Sustained demand boosts March sales, India

Sustained demand has helped many cement companies to record higher despatches in March, which is usually a peak month in terms of consumption. Indonesia’s exports down 50 per cent on strong demand

Indonesia’s cement exports shrank 50 per cent in the first two months of this year despite an increase in production, an official of the industry ministry said.     The decline was caused by strong demand on the domestic market and higher transport cost for exports, downstream chemical director Tony Tanduk said.     "Exports in the January and February fell to 196,000t down from 362,000t in the same period last year, on the contrary production rose 20 per cent to 5.92Mt," Mr Tanduk said.  ...

Two Japanese cement firms look to Russia for growth

Cemex said Monday it’s open to dialogue with authorities in Venezuela, where the government plans to take control of the cement industry. Lafarge expects a 15-20 per cent rise in the cement market in 2008, said Philippe Questiaux, general manager of  LafargeCement Romania.     Questiaux also estimates a rise in the sales of  LafargeCement, in step with the growth in the market.     For LafargeCement Romania, 2007 was an exceptional year, with a 30 per cent increase in the market, from 2006.
