The first ever private sector clinker plant started operation in Jessore, Bangladesh marking an important step for private investment in the building materials sector. The Niloy Cement Clinkerization plant has cost Tk20 crore to set up and will have a capacity of 70,000tpa. At present clinker is mainly imported from Indonesia, China and Thailand. Jiangxi Wannianqing cement to acquire Jiangxi Zhengda Cement

Jiangxi Wannianqing Cement announced that that according to its cooperation plan with China National Building Materials Cement Co., Ltd, the company is preparing to increase the new type dry cement production capacity of its controlling Nanfang Wannianqing Cement Co., Ltd to approximately 30mt within the next three years. In order to promote the implementation of the plan, the company plans to acquire the cement assets of Jiangxi Zhengda Cement Co., Ltd.

The Indian cement industry has appealed to the Centre for the allocation of additional coal. Currently, coal companies are meeting 70% of cement industry’s demand. Strabag begins construction of cement works in Hungary

Hungarian cement producer Nostra Cement, a subsidiary of Austrian construction group Strabag, has started the construction of a HUF45bn (US$241m) cement factory in Kiralyegyhaza, southern Hungary.     The factory is to be completed by 2010. Strabag plans to use half of the factory’s production, which is seen at up to 850,000t of cement, for own projects in Hungary, while the remaining is to be sold.  

Russia: cement prices up 18% in August

Prices of cement grew by 18.0% last month and of red brick and coniferous timber by 4.1%-4.8%. The average growth of prices on construction materials was 2.7% in August and 11.5% since the beginning of the year. Malawian cement producer Lafarge Portland says it is investing US$75m in a new limestone-mining project at Chenkumbi Hills, in Malawi’s southern district of Machinga. Higher demand in domestic market and a strong rupee have taken a toll on cement exports this year. Following good demand from domestic sector, cement shipments have come down by almost 30 per cent this year. According to Cement Manufacturers’ Association, exports in the April-July period have fallen by 30 per cent, from 2.85Mt to 2Mt. Total cement exports in 2006-07 was 8.96Mt.
