Cement run-away prices, Zambia

The government is working out ways to how best address the escalating price of Cement on the local market. Commerce Permanent Secretary, Davidson Chilipamushi said the government is aware that the price of cement is now as high as K70,000 per 50kg. Mr Chilipamushi said the increase in the price of cement is due to the shortage of the commodity. He said retailers have taken advantage of the shortage and are hiking the price.

The Machinery Installation JSC No 18, a subsidiary of the Vietnam Machinery Installation Corporation (LILAMA) is currently completing and running, on trial basis, a clinker production line for the Kampot cement factory in Cambodia. Tanga Cement Company Limited’s (TCC) plans to construct its own electrical power station.     With this planned expansion, the company aims at increasing its production by nearly half.     Speaking to East African Business Week, Dave King, the firm’s board chairman said: "The planned cement capacity expansion project is being finalized."

Romania’s cement producers Lafarge, Carpatcement and Holcim posted a 45% up to 155% hike in their 2006 net profit worth RON675m (nearly EUR191m). The data published by Romania’s Ministry of Economy and Finance indicated that the three companies posted a 29% up to 40% hike in their 2006 turnover.
