Lafarge on track for Tarmac, UK

The chief executive of Anglo American, Cynthia Carroll, is considering a UK£3bn auction of Tarmac, its building-materials division, this summer.   It is thought that  Lafarge has already expressed an interest in buying the business. India’s Aditya Birla Group said Saturday that cement sales in May rose 4.75 per cent on the year to 2.71Mt.     Cement production for the month grew 3.7% on year to 2.705Mt, it said in a statement.     Aditya Birla Group’s cement companies include  Grasim Industries Ltd. Turkish Ado Cimento to build cement works in Russia’s Sverdlovsk Region

Turkish leading cement producer Ado Cimento intends to build a works in Russia’s Sverdlovsk Region, the regional administration announced.     It is also known that the Turkish company is prepared to make heavy inputs in the project. Initially it plans to invest about $250m and to produce 1.5Mta. It is to increase the output to 5Mt within the next five years.

Thanks to the Chinese Government’s development and investment policies in western China, Qinghai Province saw a robust investment in construction of railways, roads, power stations, and national defense, industry and civil projects, pushing its demand for cement from 3.7Mt in 2006 to 5Mt. Ready-mixed cement and construction materials producer Cimbeton Hazirbeton announced that it acquired 99.99% of Illon Cimento for US$1.15m. The statement issued by Cimbeton noted that Illon is located in the premises of Soma thermoelectricity plant and it provides fly ash. India’s JK Cement is planning to invest around Rs 2,500 crore to increase its capacity three-fold to 15Mt in five years.
