Bolivia’s Soboce imports fuel oil

Bolivian cement maker Sociedad Boliviana de Cemento (Soboce) has announced that it will import 250,000 liters of fuel oil  due to a likely reduction in the supply of natural gas. The import of the product from Chile will be made through Bolivian state-run company Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB). Soboce disclosed that in 2006 it failed to produce 90,000t of cement due to the lack of natural gas.

Pakistani cement makers say they expect to increase sharply their imports of South African coal during the financial year beginning July because of the shortage of Indonesian material. The newly-established Gulf Cement Company, which has set a target of 5000tpd, is slated to start production within the next two years. India May cement sales up 10.6 per cent on year

Cement sales in India rose 10.6 per cent in May to 14.21Mt, data from the Cement Manufacturers’ Association showed.     Production stood at 14.25Mt last month against 13Mt a year earlier, the association said.     India has a capacity to manufacture 177Mt a year. Producers have announced plans to add another 100Mt capacity by 2009/10.    

Iraq to begin construction of cement factory

A spokesperson for Karbala City Council announced that the chairman of the council has inked an agreement along with Lafarge, to set up a cement factory which will have an output of 1.5Mta, according to reports from the Iraq Directory. He went on to say that the agreement was validated on the condition that the central government of Iraq receives four per cent of the company’s yearly production. The facility is expected to be completed by 2009.

Indonesia Gresik expects 1H sales volume to grow six per cent on year

PT Semen Gresik expects 1H cement sales to increase by six per cent on year to around 7Mt.     "We sold the commodity at an average price of between $48 and $50/t," Semen Gresik President Director Dwi Sutjipto said.     Gresik’s revenue for the first six months of this year will total between $325m and $338m, he added.

JSW to venture into cement production, India

The Sajjan Jindal steered JSW Group is venturing into cement production. The group has floated JSW Cement, a company, which is setting up a slag-based 4Mt clinker facility in Andhra Pradesh at an estimated cost of Rs 1,200-1,300 crore. This will be in the first phase of the group’s entry into cement manufacturing, and is expected to go on-stream by 2009. Holcim holds majority stake in Singapore peer Jurong Cement

Holcim said it has successfully completed the mandatory general offer to the remaining shareholders of Singapore’s Jurong Cement and now holds a 55 per cent majority stake in the group.   The Swiss cement maker said this corresponds to a total investment of approximately US$33m.
