Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd of India plans to set up a mini cement plant using the waste products generated from its paper mill as a raw material. Holcim’s first quarter turnover rose by 23.8% to SFr5,728m (EUR3,536m) and the operating EBITDA advanced by 34.0% to SFr1,342m (EUR828m) with margins improving from 21.6% in 2005 to 23.4%.  The trading profit improved by 44.2% to SFr904m (EUR558m) and at the net attributable level the increase was 109.4% to SFr356m (EUR220m). Lafarge looks to invest US$40m in Ventanas

The Chilean unit of Lafarge is evaluating the feasibility of building a US$40m milling plant in Ventanas, in central region V, according to local news reports.     Press reports from ’La Tercera’ noted that Lafarge’s subsidiary - which up until last week was called Cemento Melón - is evaluating the economic feasibility of building the 600,000tpa capacity plant.    The decision needs to be made by the beginning of 2008 in order for the plant to start operating by 2009. Sales of cement increases in Venezuela

Domestic sales of cement in Venezuela totaled 1.54Mt in the first quarter of this year boosted by the construction sector. It represents an increase of 20.80 per cent compared with equal period of 2006 when sales totaled 1.26Mt. The information was announced by Venezuelan cement producers association Asociacion Venezolana de Productores de Cemento.   

President Obasanjo to commission Dangote cement factory, Nigeria
