Colombian consumption up 11.2 per cent

The Instituto Colombiano de Productores de Cemento said that domestic Portland cement consumption reached 2.789,481t from January to April this year. This represents an increase of 11.2 per cent YoY, and a growth of 13 per cent if compared with the same period of 2005.

Cementir increased its turnover in the first three months of the year by 12.0% to EUR243.3m. Orient Cement reduces price

Orient Cement has reduced the price of its popular brands, Orient Gold and Birla A1 premium cement by Rs 2 to Rs 4 per bag. The measure was in support of the Government’s effort to contain cement prices and pass on the benefit to the consumers, Mr A.K. Kejriwal, Executive Vice-President (Marketing), Orient Cement said in a release.  

Cemex expands operations in Pertigalete, Venezuela

Cemex of Mexico has announced that it has expanded its operational and logistical platform in Venezuela so as to increase its supplies of cement to the domestic construction sector. Cemex’s plant in Pertigalete received investment of Bolivar$18bn in this sense and can now offer an extra 500,000 bags of cement per month. Cemex’s Venezuelan sales have risen by more than 116% in the last three years.   

Lafarge to build third plant in Russia

Lafarge plans to start the construction of a new plant in Russia’s Kaluga Region south of Moscow in the autumn of 2007, to produce 2.5Mta, according to local news reports.   Lafarge has won the tender to develop the Borshchovskoye limestone deposit and use that resource as raw material for cement production, the regional Economics Ministry said. South African cement sales accelerated to a 17.8% YoY increase in April to 1.098Mt despite the disruption caused by many public holidays in the month after rising by 15.8% YoY in March, data supplied by the Cement and Concrete Institute showed. This brought the increase in the first four months of 2007 to 16.5% YoY after last year’s 11.0% rise to a record 13.252Mt. Cementownia Ozarow has been ordered to pay a fine of PLN 2m (EUR530,000) for withholding information and obstructing the inspection process, the Office for Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has announced.
