Cement shortage hits project, Bahrain

A cement shortage has delayed construction at a $4.5bn shopping and residential project being co-developed by the Bahrain unit of Kuwait Finance House, Bahrain’s Gulf Daily News reported yesterday. RAK Cement’s Q1 net falls on higher energy costs

Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd. , India’s third-biggest cement maker, said on Wednesday its March shipments fell 4.5 per cent to 1.48Mt from 1.55Mt a year earlier.     Production fell to 1.43Mt from 1.53Mt a year earlier, the company said in a statement.

South African cement sales rose impressively by 16.7% in the first three months of 2007 compared with the first three months of last year, the Cement and Concrete Institute (CNCI) data showed. Greek cement firm Titan’s  U.S. unit signed an agreement to buy Virginia-based ready-mix concrete firm Powhatan as part of its expansion plans, it said in a statement on Wednesday.     Titan America LLC is expected to complete the purchase of Powhatan, which operates five plants, in May, the company said. The cement production in Argentina has fallen by 2.1% in March, in comparison with the same month of 2006, and a 4.6% in comparison with February 2007, due to a deceleration of the construction sector.     The factories produced 710,943t, including exports, in March.     According to sector’s analysts, the fall in construction activity affects directly to the cement market.
