Bangladesh suspends coal discharge in fear of coronavirus

Bangladesh has suspended offloading of imported coal from a foreign flag vessel due to suspicion of coronavirus in crew, at Mongla port in southern Bangladesh last week. Tourah Portland Cement posts net loss in 2019

Egypt’s Tourah Portland Cement has posted a net loss of EGP617.25m (US$39.3m) in 2019, compared with an EGP36.09m profit in the previous year. Total sales also declined 51.7 per cent YoY to EGP531.75m from EGP1.1bn. The company’s board of directors has reportedly stated that it has been one of the worst years for the industry due to higher supply, stronger competition and lower demand.

Puerto Rican cement demand drops 20% in January 2020

Cement sales in Puerto Rico declined 20.4 per cent YoY to 36,255t. The drop in demand was attributed to falling levels of construction after Hurricane Maria as government funds and insurance payment finish, according to Sin Comillas. Cement production in January dropped 17.1 per cent to 35,176t, the first reduction in three months. In 2018 full-year output declined 6.7 per cent YoY to 524,443t.

Cement demand in Argentina fell 25.4 per cent YoY ad 7.9 per cent MoM to 686,671t in February 2020, according to AFCP, the domestic cement association. There were no imports as domestic cement producers were able to meet the entire volume required by the market. National Cement Co of Kenya has struck out on its own in asking for an increase on clinker import duty from 10 to 25 per cent. Cement dispatches in Colombia increased by 8.5 per cent YoY to 995,400t in January 2020 from 917,100t in January 2019, according the country’s statistics office, DANE. Cement dispatches in Chile slipped two per cent YoY in January 2020. Deliveries fell to 331,783t in the first month of the year from 350,122t in January 2019, according to the Chilean construction chamber, CChC. Dispatches in 2019 rose 2.2 per cent YoY to 4,081,896t when compared with 3,992,501t in 2018.

All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers' Association (APCMA) has issued dispatches data for the month of February and 8M cumulative data for July 2019-February 2020. The country's cement sector posted growth of 33.9 per cent in February 2020 and 10 per cent in 8MFY19-20.
