JK Cement buys grey cement unit

JK Cement Ltd. said late on Saturday it had taken over the assets of Nihon Nirmaan Ltd from lender IDBI Ltd for INR420m.   JK plans to make 300,000-350,000t of grey cement at the unit, which is expected to start operations in the Oct-Dec quarter, it said in a statement.    JK’s current capacity stands at 4Mt of grey cement and 350,000t of white cement. 

But Son cement-maker to up production with new line

The But Son Cement Company yesterday officially started construction on a second production line at its But Son factory. The line, which is valued at over VND2,807bn (over US$175.4m), will be able to produce 1.6Mt of cement a year, it said. CCCL’s US$133mn kiln expansion expected mid-2008

Jamaica’s Caribbean Cement Company (CCCL) will finish the US$133m expansions to its kiln five by mid-2008, government information service JIS quoted project manager Ken Wiltshire as saying.    CCCL, a subsidiary of Trinidad Cement Ltd. (TCL), began the expansions in January 2005, and has completed about 50% of the project, said Wiltshire.    Since then, CCCL has purchased 80% of all major equipment, and initiated all major construction work, added the manager.

The Song Thao Cement Joint Stock Company signed a VND370 billion (US$23 million) credit agreement with two Vietnamese banks for the construction of the Song Thao cement factory. PT Semen Andalas Indonesia, a unit of Lafarge SA of France, said it has started reconstruction of a cement plant that will have capacity of 1.6Mta. The Trade department is monitoring the prices of cement and warned firms against unreasonable price increases after several cement firms raised their prices ahead of the summer construction season. The Philippine cement industry became slightly weaker in 2006, with sales declining by nearly 2%, the Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines said.     Cement sales reached 11.48Mt in 2006, down by 1.7% from 11.67Mt in 2005.     Despite weaker consumption in 2006, the industry is optimistic in 2007, saying the sector is poised for growth.     Industry data showed that the sales in Luzon and Mindanao decreased by 2.3% and 1.6%, respectively.
